What do I need to know?

WHAT IS IT?

An online book club to talk about nature books with other young people!

WHEN IS IT?

The club is held online every other month, on the last Sunday at 6pm unless otherwise stated. Sessions usually last up to 45 minutes.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO ATTEND?

Fill in the form on this page to receive emails about the book club (such as polls to vote on which book to read, Zoom links for the sessions, book announcements etc.). We will also email you a link to join our book club WhatsApp group. Meetings are free to attend. Try to read the book in time for the meeting, but if you haven’t finished in time, don’t worry! As most of our books will be non-fiction, it isn’t always necessary to have finished it, so if you want to come along and discuss it anyway, please do.

WHO IS IT FOR?

The book club is targeted towards ages 18-35, and people living or studying in the UK, as the books will have a focus on UK nature. You don’t need to have any background in nature or literature, or be “well-read” – this is a positive space to talk about nature; not a space for literary critique or political discussion. We want everyone to feel comfortable and enjoy the meetings.

WHAT BOOKS WILL YOU READ?

We will choose books with a focus on UK nature, written by young people where possible. We will choose the next meeting’s book by vote at the previous meeting, and will take suggestions via our social media and in the meetings themselves!

For our list of potential reads, and add your own suggestions, please see our goodreads long list: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/226039.UKY4N_Book_Club_Long_List

HOW CAN I ACCESS THE BOOKS?

There are many ways to access the books we will be reading in the book club, whether you purchase them from an online or physical bookstore (first or secondhand), borrowing them from your local library, or listening to the audiobook (we recommend joining your local library and joining Borrowbox or any similar e-library app which gives you free audiobook and ebook access).

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN THE MEETING?

A UKY4N volunteer will introduce the session, and start off the discussion. We will have some discussion prompts on hand, but we hope to see where the conversation takes us! The focus will be on what we enjoyed from the book, what it inspired us to do, what we learned, who we’d recommend it to, what personal wildlife experiences it reminded us of etc. This is a positive space to talk about nature; not a space for literary critique or political discussion. We want everyone to feel comfortable and enjoy the meetings. If you have any questions, please get in touch ukyouthfornature@gmail.com

PLEASE FILL OUT THIS FORM TO SIGN UP TO THE BOOK CLUB!

Once signed up, you will be sent a link to join the WhatsApp group (optional). Please note, we are a small team so it may take a couple of days for the link to be sent to you. By signing up, you confirm you are aged 18 or over.
